Despite not having been in my boat for the best part of 10 days (boats were stuck in Brasil), and not having paddled on the Graveyard since the race here last April, I was pleasantly surprised with my performance today. With two really good runs, and only two touches (given the course / site this isn't that many), the only thing separating me and a good result was missing a downstream gate on my first run!
To expand a little, I did the tricky up right before the downstream gate on the middle section just a little too well, and left myself with no where to go except downstream - rapidly! A sharpish paddle back meant I gave away only 5 or so seconds but in a field separated by tenths this was rather a large time loss.
The second run was pretty much identical to the first, with the exception of not missing any gates. I finished 8th in the end, which, given the first run mistake wasn't too bad (in terms of bad races!). Incidentally, I finished 8th in the same race last year, although I don't recall missing any gates, which tells me I must be a damn sight quicker this year than last!
