Sorry for the lack of posts recently, but really not a lot is happening apart from lots and lots of training; in essence what I've been doing is laying the foundations for the upcoming season. To give an idea, December has been characterised by what you might describe as 'technical-reinforcement' work. In other words, building and refining on some of the ideas and techniques that became apparent during the 'technical-discovery' months of October and November.
This stage necessarily involves a lot of time on the white-water, grooving and honing the new ideas. Unfortunately, it also coincides (and has coincided!) with some very cold weather. I can safely say the pogies, and a few other items of cold weather gear have made mutiple appearences over the last week or so!
Off the water, I made the decision at the beginning of the winter to spend slightly less time in the gym, cutting down the sessions from three or four a week, to two and a pilates session. The reasoning behind this was that ultimately, races are (obviously) won and lost on the white-water, and whilst weight training does, unquestionably, have a role to play in optimising performance, I felt my energies could be better directed to time spent on the white-water working on the above.
Last week I returned from a training camp to Zoetermeer. The site, which will host our GB and Olympic team selection races next April, has been a regular training venue since it opened last October. Given that there is no comparable venue in the UK, I'll be making regular trips there over the coming months in preparation for selection. The week itself was a good one, with lots of volume and a few interesting moves. I also managed to plough into one of the bollards which makes the whitewater; fortunately the bollard broke and not my boat!
